St Albans Streets Woes and Pros

A group sharing experiences and advocating for safer, healthier local streets.

St Albans Streets Woes and Pros
ABOUT

The aim of this group is to build the story of how the streets of St Albans are used and what the real effects of the Christchurch Northern Arterial are on road users experiences and local residents lives at the end of the motorway corridor.

The Christchurch Northern Corridor (CNC) is based on the NROSS report (2002) and is made up of the Northern Arterial (NA) which exits onto the Northern Arterial Extension (NAE) through the Cranford Basin and enters the Cranford St which has been upgraded (CSU Project) and ends at the six lane intersection with Innes Road.

At the time these were approved following an Environment Court Hearing in November 2015 there were no plans in place for the 28,000 vehicles expected to enter the urban streets downstream from Innes Road.

Due of this lack of planning and the commissioners belief that the downstream effects would have negative impacts on residents, a condition on these approvals was that a Downstream Effects Management Plan (DEMP) be in place when the NA opened until 2031.

The DEMP is a recommended programme of work to reduce the downstream effects of the Christchurch Northern Corridor (CNC) and to address transport concerns raised by stakeholders and the public during consultation.

The focus of the DEMP is to mitigate the impacts of the additional traffic that will enter the local network at Cranford Street not to reduce traffic.

The story built here will improve future transport projects, the development of healthy streets and the mitigation of traffic in our community.

The group is not focused on singling out individuals or reporting traffic offenses to the police. It is a place for us to share what we see and experience on our streets and use these stories to help make our streets safer for all.
